Smoke fills the air upon entering the theater as the audience is greeted by a man in pain and anguish. Soon a large hole in the center of his abdomen sprouts a flower which attracts a beautiful butterfly. Experiencing Hyperbole: changes is like dreaming, as figures materialize and morph unexpectedly as stories unfold, challenging audience’s perception.

Hyperbole: changes was a theatrical event unique to the Rogues and comprised a series of short vignettes set to original music, designed to defy logic and inspire the viewer. Hyperbole: changes did not rely on dialogue to convey its messages; it instead took advantage of the lesser-used storytelling conventions of mask work, music, puppetry, and visceral imagery to transport audiences into a word of imagination.

Featuring music contributions from many collaborating artists and a cast of over 50 puppets, masks, and performing objects.

“There are no spoken words in this collection of short vignettes, but there are plenty of sounds and images, from seven-foot-high stilt puppets and singing vultures to dancing bed sheets and an original musical score that might actually elicit a smile from Thom Yorke.”
OC Weekly

HYPERBOLE: changes was developed by Rogue Artists Ensemble collaboratively and staged as a late-night performance offering at the Rude Guerrilla Theater in Santa Ana, CA. The project was a great success and allowed 30+ artists the chance to collaborate successfully on the creation of a new performance work that challenged audiences with its fractured views on reality, childhood, and of course "changes."

This was our first large scale HYPERBOLE project and we are not planning on bringing it back to perform at this time.

“The dance, the music, the masks, the puppets—hell, the entire concept—borders on the brilliant…”

In the Press

“…delivering theater in a nonverbal, non-intellectual form takes incredible artistic acumen. Beckett certainly had it; had the Blue Man Group not turned into a commercial franchise, it could have come close. The Rogues definitely are on their way; the simple fact that they’ve mounted an hour-long show without spoken words is proof enough.”

HYPERBOLE: changes was produced by Rogue Artists Ensemble in association with the Rude Guerrilla Theater Company. This project was made possibly through the generosity of the Rogues' supporters.
